We get a lot of spammers trying to join the forums. Having learned a tough lesson back in the days when we allowed immediate membership without checking and got postings of dogs and horses and women doing unspeakable things, requests for memberships are now held until we can check them. There are a number of databases out there that let you check to see if an email address is used for spamming. Those people are summarily rejected.
Sometimes we get membership requests like the one this morning from ILoveDcups (who has a .ru or Russian address). Those we don't even have to check.

It's tedious but it keeps the forums clean for real users.
